I can't really find out what year Bridgeport began the BOSS line up, But back in the 70's my father had a machine shop in the Los Angeles area. He got a call one day from a Bridgeport dealer who wanted him to go to a private showing of some new fancy CNC milling machine. It was a Bridgeport BOSS  with the Erickson Quick change spindle & a Bridgeport Tech running the BOSS. Needless to say that collet chuck came flying out at the people standing near by ( everyone was fine ) The Tech then put the collet chuck back in an beat on the wrench with a hammer and turned the machine back on. Well it worked then & my dad ended up buying the first one sold in L.A. but not with that Erickson slow change He used the Universal #200 Kwik Change Spindle. The Universal Spindle is far superior over the Standard R8 & Erickson 30. The Universal features a positive locking taper & spindle nut unlike the Erickson. In my opinion no mill should be made without that spindle as an option. & Bridgeport / Hardinge should not even consider building a machine CNC without it

It's funny my dad grew up in Hollywood, and in 1946 - 1948 he had a newspaper stand where he would set out papers & a cigar box with money in it, so people could make they're own change while he went on to school. He told me in all that time, he never came up shorted.

The Bridgeport BOSS line was a very successful line of CNC milling machines. These machine were rigorously updated and improvements were made as soon as possible for operator ease and efficiency. The only flaw was the BTC-1 Series with BOSS 7.2 Operating Software; although the software

This was like the machine that my dad bought. As a small boy I remember standing next to it and being amazed just at the size and beauty of this machine. The work that they were designed to do was simply incredible to say the least. The BOSS series machines were way a head of they're time. The BOSS 4, 5, & 6 virtually look all about the same and came either with a V-Ram Pictured above or the Rigid Ram below

Rigid Ram

Bridgeport's Famous Rigid Ram. The Rigid Ram is my personal favorite, I guess because I own an R2E4 & I have always liked the looks. Up until recently Bridgeport still made the Rigid Ram and it was found in the superb PC Based Explorer X26
